Apple and China UnionPay today announced a partnership to bring Apple Pay to China.

According to a press release, China UnionPay cardholders will now be able to add their bank cards to Apple Pay on iPhone, Apple Watch and iPad.

Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services, noted the importance of the new market for Apple.

“China is an extremely important market for Apple and with China UnionPay and support from 15 of China’s leading banks, users will soon have a convenient, private and secure payment experience,” Cue said in a statement.

The addition of UnionPay customers is no small matter. To date, the total number of the UnionPay Card issued both at home and abroad has been over 5 billion.

Apple Pay will roll out to China UnionPay cardholders sometime in 2016 after passing regulatory muster in China.
