Sprint on Monday announced that it has signed a direct roaming agreement with Cuba. 

“Earlier this month Sprint became the first U.S. wireless carrier to sign a direct roaming agreement with Telecommunications Company of Cuba,” said Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure. “Customers are now seeing the benefit of this relationship by having an easy and affordable way to use their phone when traveling to Cuba.”

'Affordable' might be a stretch. 

According to a press release, Sprint customers can now place voice calls when roaming in Cuba for $2.49 per minute, but data on the island will run $1.99 per megabyte, and SMS text messaging is 50 cents to send and free to receive.

Sprint is asking customers to check its website before travelling to Cuba to ensure that their phone has international capabilities. 

Sprint's prepaid brand Boost announced its "Cuba Monthly Connect" plan earlier this year, which includes unlimited talk, text and data with 15 minutes per month of voice calling to Cuba and unlimited international texting from anywhere in the United States. 

MetroPCS has also added Cuba to it's "World Calling" add-on, and AT&T's Cricket Wireless prepaid brand expanded to Cuba back in June.  expanding to Cuba.  

Cricket International Cuba offers 15 minutes of calls to Cuba from the US for $15 per month.
