Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S8 device was the world’s top-selling Android device in the second quarter, but Apple’s iPhone 7 remained dominant in overall shipments, new data from Strategy Analytics shows.

According to the report, Samsung’s Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus ended the quarter with 10.2 million and 9 million shipments, respectively. But while those figures handily topped those of Android competitors – like Xiaomi’s Redmi 4A with 5.5 million shipments – they came in substantially behind the numbers for Apple’s iPhone 7 and 7 Plus.

Strategy Analytics noted the iPhone 7 pulled in 16.9 million shipments in the second quarter, accounting for about 5 percent of the worldwide smartphone market share. The larger iPhone 7 Plus also performed well, with 15.1 million shipments, or about 4 percent worldwide market share.

“The iPhone 7 remains the world’s most popular smartphone model overall, due to a compelling blend of user-friendly design, extensive supporting apps, and widespread retail presence for the device,” Strategy Analytics Senior Analyst Juha Winter commented. “Apple today accounts for two of the world’s top five smartphone models.”

Apple and Samsung are set to continue their battle for the top seat, as both are poised for device launches in the coming weeks. Samsung has scheduled its big event for next week, presumably to unveil the Galaxy Note 8. Apple is expected to unveil its 10th anniversary iPhone in mid-September.

The latest news on the latter appears to be confirmation that the next iPhone will come with a full-screen display. And the tipster? McDonald’s.

Well-known technology leaker Evan Blass on Thursday retweeted a message sent to McDonald’s customers in Australia that appears to use “iPhone 8” imagery in a new ad campaign. The slip was noted by others on Twitter as well.
