CommScope Introduces Indoor Location Solution

CommScope is offering up a new solution to make it easier for emergency services personnel to locate mobile phone users inside large buildings.

The GeoLENs Indoor location solution, part of the Andrew Solutions Network Applications portfolio, integrates with wireless indoor coverage systems, including distributed antenna systems (DAS), repeaters and other RF equipment.

GeoLENs Indoor can be deployed with existing DAS infrastructure or as a stand-alone indoor location solution and offers the advantage of working with existing handsets, the company says. With it, wireless operators are able to offer improved accuracy for callers in-building, as well as use the capability for commercial applications such as mobile advertising and social networking applications.

The GeoLENs Indoor solution operates by determining a caller’s proximity to signal detection devices and other network components that are part or independent of the in-building coverage system. The company expects deployments to occur first in large public venues such as stadiums, office buildings, malls, airports and hospitals. CommScope says it already has deployed GeoLENs Indoor in a U.S. Tier I network to provide locations in an airport, high rise office building and urban canyon environment.

Bitstream Makes SDK Available

Bitstream announced the availability of the BOLTSDK, a suite of technology and tools that enables mobile application developers to build feature-rich Java (Java ME) applications that work just as well as on entry-level feature phones as they do on high-end smartphones. With it, any company with Web-based content, such as media companies, can produce mobile apps that are ready to run on billions of mobile phones already in the market.

BOLTdelivers faster page load times, along with an array of capabilities typically associated with desktop computer browsers, to any type of mobile phone platform. To achieve the speed and advanced features, Bitstream engineered a cloud-computing architecture that enables all of the BOLT browser’s capabilities. 

The cloud-computing architecture is available to service providers as the BOLT SDK, which can be used to build robust Web applications delivered through custom user interfaces. The BOLT SDK supports Web apps written in HTML5, JavaScript and other Web programming languagesand can deliver the same features employed by BOLT, including downloading files and desktop style layout.

Depending on the required application capabilities, the BOLT SDK can be configured in terms of package size and memory usage.

TelitGets Tapped for Vehicle Asset Management GPS Product

Telit Wireless Solutions, the U.S.-based mobile technology arm of Telit Communications, says its GE865-QUAD cellular module has been selected by REDTAIL Telematics for its VAM (Vehicle Asset Management) GPS product, a tracking device designed as part of a comprehensive wireless fleet management solution.

Equipped with REDTAIL Telematics Protocol (RTP), VAM offers fleet managers a set of vehicle data, tracking events such as excessive acceleration, speeding, harsh braking, excessive idling and GSM or GPS tampering and jamming detection. The Telit GE865-QUAD module allows for the real-time transmission of these detailed records over cellular networks, readily accessible for fleet managers using the customizable REDTAIL Telematics Fleet Management Solution software.

VAM was designed under an exclusive partnership with Plextek Limited, the first of many products to be introduced into the REDTAIL portfolio. The hardware offers the flexibility of an internal GSM/GPS antenna with the option to use an external GPS antenna as well as five inputs and outputs. VAM can detect harsh breaking and rapid acceleration and features an optional IP67 offering for harsh fleet environments. OBDII integration capability and a software development kit (SDK) allow users to leverage VAM capabilities for their unique business needs.

Omnitron Enables Mutual SLA Compliance for Ethernet Backhaul

Omnitron Systems announced the ability to support mutual service level agreement (SLA) assurance for wholesale Ethernet backhaul services. 

Omnitron’s new iConverterHybridNID is a network interface device (NID) that enables the delivery of carrier-grade Ethernet backhaul services across multipleoperator networksand provides independent SLA verification when two providers collaborate to deliver one service. With the iConverterHybridNID installed at the cell tower, both a wireless carrier and backhaul operator partner can provision, manage and monitor the Ethernet service. 

The HybridNID provides Ethernet service demarcation for performance monitoring of the entire backhaul circuit and provides demarcation for the wholesale service from the External Network-to-Network Interface (ENNI) to the tower. With two logical demarcation points in a single device, both the wireless carrier and the backhaul operator have service OAM functions for SLA assurance.

The HybridNID complies with IEEE 802.1ag Connectivity Fault Management and ITU-T Y.1731 Performance Monitoring standards. 

The backhaul operator owns, installs, manages and maintains the HybridNID, which is part of the wholesale access service, or “tunnel” that is leased by the wireless carrier.  The carrier has management access to provision service attributes.  Both the backhaul operator and wireless carrier can monitor OAM functions.

uTest Express Launches

uTest has launched uTest Express, a service aimed at giving startups affordable access to the company’s community of professional testers.

The company says that since 2008, uTest has leveraged its community of more than 35,000 professional testers to help companies such as Microsoft, AOL, Intuit and Groupon launch their Web and mobile applications. With uTest Express, the benefits of professional mobile app testing and expert feedback are now available to early stage startups.

uTest says even those with no testing experience will find uTest Express easy to use. Once the project scope is outlined, uTest handpicks members of its tester community who best match the testing requirements and have the right mobile devices and operating systems. The customer’s mobile application is then tested professionally on real devices across real wireless carriers, providing “in the wild” results unobtainable from testing with emulators, simulators or remote access.

At the conclusion of each real-world testing project, customers receive a list of bugs, including screenshots and videos with steps to reproduce them. Customers also receive feedback from the testers about the application – including app ratings and feedback for interface design, usability, app performance and more.

Pricing starts at $499 per test cycle. For Bronze and Silver packages, all testers are from North America. Customers who choose the Gold package can specify geographic testing coverage, as well as which carriers and devices they want covered.
