News Briefs for October 30, 2007

WirelessWeek - October 30, 2007

NXP Semiconductors announced the shipment of its 500 millionth Aero RF CMOS transceiver to the mobile handset market. Of this 500 million, some 100 million were shipped in the past seven months alone, shortly after the company's acquisition of the cellular operations of RF CMOS-leader Silicon Laboratories. The shipments include sales of standalone RF CMOS transceivers and those integrated as part of NXP's cellular system platforms.

SkyCross, a global wireless company providing antenna-centric RF solutions, announced that Intel has chosen its internal SkyCross WiMAX antennas for the Dana Point Express34 PC card reference design. The  SkyCross antenna technology is embedded into these new, narrower PC cards, enabling device manufacturers to create stylish designs that appeal to consumer electronics buyers. The solution implements a diversity configuration with ample isolation between the two antennas so each antenna delivers excellent performance.

• Even though the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) recently ratified WiMAX as a 3G standard, wireless providers in China may feel differently. According to ChinaDaily.com, the vice chief engineer of Datang Telecom Technology and Industry Group claims that WiMax isn't ready to be a next-generation standard. "WiMax…is unable to support seamless handover, and can't meet mainstream 3G standards," Datang's Chen Shanzhi reportedly said.
