• Ericsson has signed a service deal to manage spare parts supply and logistics for Telefonica Mexico's GSM network. Under the terms of the deal, Ericsson will manage multivendor spare parts for radio access, transmission and Telefonica Mexico's core network. No financial details were provided, but the telecom equipment manufacturer said it was a multi-year contract.
• Google announced its CFO, George Reyes, will retire by the end of the year. His departure came as a surprise today, marking the first change in leadership since the company went public three years ago. Reyes did not give a reason as to why he is leaving.
• Bluepulse, a mobile social networking firm, announced its expansion into the North American market, with new headquarters in Silicon Valley, as well as $6 million in new funding from VantagePoint Venture Partners. Bluepulse's application promises to enable users to communicate and meet new people through one-to-one and broadcast messaging, profiles, picture and video sharing, chat and a wide range of mobile widgets.
• Tango Telecom, provider of real-time convergent charging and intelligent messaging software, will launch its SMS Parental Control Solution, iAX SMS Guardian, at the 3GSM 3G Middle East & Gulf 2007 event in Dubai next week. iAX SMS Guardian gives parents the ability to monitor and control mobile phone usage by minors. The software offers a range of parental control services including: whitelisting or blacklisting numbers, SMS copy and discard, blocking subscription services over premium rate SMS and applying blackout periods. Subscribers can manage the service via the Web or SMS.
• Eagle International Communications, developer, owner and operator of telecommunications tower sites, has completed a special-purpose financing facility. Eagle plans to use this finance facility to fuel its growth through acquisitions ranging in size from 100 to 2,000+ towers which are strategically located within Eagle's target geographic footprint in major metropolitan areas and along major interstate highways in the United States. The credit facility was completed through IEV Capital (IEV).
• Synchronica is offering a free trial of its Mobile Gateway 3.0 mobile synchronization software to users of feature phones and smartphones from Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Samsung. The trial allows users of any mobile phone that supports the industry standard IMAP and SyncML protocols to use Mobile Gateway free of charge to send and receive corporate and personal e-mail. Users simply visit www.synchronica.com to register their mobile phones with Synchronica's Mobile Gateway and sign up for the free 60-day trial. After the trial period, Synchronica intends to announce migration options to a commercially supported solution, including offerings through service providers.
• Enpocket is using Oracle Database 10g Standard Edition on Linux to support global expansion and help deliver mobile advertising solutions for its customers. Because its ad serving, behavioral targeting and reporting products are delivered both as a managed service and inside the mobile operator networks, Enpocket must adhere to aggressive service level agreements (SLAs) that mandate almost zero downtime and guarantee superior performance levels. The Oracle Database provides the backbone for a data warehouse and reporting system that enables the company to provide a real-time dashboard to publishers and advertisers, so they can view the performance of mobile ad campaigns and optimize them on the fly.
• Smoothstone IP Communications, provider of managed enterprise IP communications, has unveiled its new Intelligent Call Control (ICC) platform. This applications suite gives Smoothstone clients a new alternative to automated call distribution (ACD) hardware and software packages. ICC requires no additional equipment, is priced according to client organization size, and can be customized to fit an individual organization's needs. The ICC includes Smoothstone Call Director and three other, productivity-enhancing modules that can be added to a client's customized solution: Call Queuing, Call Monitoring and Call Recording.
• Distributor Hutton Communications will now distribute EION Wireless products to the Canadian and U.S. markets. The VIP 110-24, Ultima3 wireless radios and the Libra MAX WiMAX platform will now be available through Hutton Communications distribution. EION Wireless products operate in licensed and unlicensed frequencies and are used by businesses, telecom operators, governments and enterprises to deliver high-speed wireless communications solutions.
• Freescale Semiconductor has chosen AeroScout's real-time location solution to track and manage all production wafer lot boxes throughout one of its wafer fabrication factories. AeroScout, provider of Wi-Fi-based Active RFID solutions, and Freescale designed a solution that allows associates to locate lots (specialized wafer containers) on the factory floor. With the RFID solution, the lot location is displayed on a screen within seconds of arrival. Each lot is affixed with one of AeroScout's Wi-Fi-based Active RFID tags. The tags communicate over Freescale's standard Wi-Fi network. AeroScout MobileView software then accurately maps the lots' locations as they progress through the manufacturing cycle and integrates directly with Freescale's existing manufacturing systems. The actual lot is then triggered to visually identify itself via the tag's LED lights.
• Mark Pugerude recently joined Reef Point Systems as the vice president of corporate and business development. Pugerude was previously senior vice president of marketing and business development at Broadwing.
• iTRAK Corporation, provider of GPS-based tracking, mapping and reporting solutions, has introduced its new FleetFinder application for PDA and smartphone devices. With FleetFinder, supervisors in the field can see a list of vehicles in their fleets, and choose what information to display about any vehicle. Choices include a directional icon on a full-screen interactive map; an information window showing text-based location, time and speed; or a daily summary of position count, stop count and geofence activity. The application is available as a free download for iTRAK Fleet Manager customers, and specific versions have been optimized to run on a large number of handsets, including the BlackBerry and Windows Mobile platforms.
• Andrew Corporation has won a major upgrade contract for the Mass Transit Railway Corporation's (MTRC) territory-wide radio network in Hong Kong. As part of this project, Andrew will modify MTRC's communications infrastructure in stations, tunnels and other buildings to enable migration of the railway's radio system from a conventional 80 MHz trunk radio system to an 800 MHz Tetra system.
• Crisp Wireless has extended its partnership with Gannett Company, powering mobile Websites for more than 30 of Gannett's local newspaper and TV properties. Crisp Wireless has worked with Gannett since 2005 when both companies launched the USA TODAY mobile Website. As part of these strategic partnerships, Crisp Wireless also helps market the mobile Websites, including search engine optimization and traffic enhancement by sending links to the mobile Web via text messaging. In recent months, Crisp Wireless has announced local content partnerships with a number of newspaper brands and local content aggregators including Internet Broadcasting Systems, Tribune Interactive and Washington Post.
