Guardian Mobile Communications plans to introduce a 2-way, restricted-use
mobile communications service designed specifically to give parents of pre-teens
more control over their children's communications.
The service, which offers only basic voice services, is being described by
Guardian Mobile as a "mini-mobile" service. The Parent Pal Pocket Communicator
features two send buttons on its touchpad, enabling parents to restrict their
child's use to placing calls using pre-programmed "guardian numbers" designated
by the subscriber. The service also limits incoming calls pre-designated
"guardian numbers."
"Parents like the convenience and peace-of-mind that cell phones provide, but
are concerned that their pre-teen children may not act responsibly if given a
phone with all of the features and functionality available through today's
mobile phones," said Gregory Barry, Guardian Mobile's senior vice president of
operations.
Pricing for the service has not yet be set, but Guardian Mobile expects it
will be offered on a flat-rate basis, with subscribers paying a fixed monthly
fee for service.
The Parent Pal Pocket Communicator is expected to make its debut by
mid-year.
