Texting while driving can produce truly tragic results and this new commercial does its jarring best to simulate the trauma. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s new clip is short and painfully effective at conveying the danger of texting while driving. This week a Time profile revealed that Google’s modular handset initiative, Project Ara, could yield a $50 smartphone within a year or so. In this recent video update, project head Paul Eremenko and others involved talk about the direction in which Project Ara is heading. We’re still far from owning a modular handset but, considering the success of the Lego Movie, people could be in the mood for building their own smartphones.

If the connected car space grows to be as big as expected, there will likely be room for all sorts of UI variations. The simple design displayed in this video proposes a gesture-based tactile approach and reasons that this UI could be easier to control and less distracting.
