Judge Denies Apple Request to Ban Samsung Phones

A federal judge late Monday rejected Apple Inc.'s demands that its chief rival in the more than $100 billion global smartphone market cease selling models a jury recently found illegally used Apple technology. The immediate impact of the ruling means that Samsung can continue to sell three of the older-generation smartphones still on U.S. shelves.

Huawei Will Open R&D Center in Finland

Huawei Monday announced a move to set up shop on Nokia's home turf. The Chinese company says it will invest $90 million over a five-year period to establish a research and development (R&D) center in Helsinki, Finland. Huawei said the move will add to its existing R&D deployments, which include over 70,000 employees worldwide.

Growth in Smart Connected Devices Expected to Continue

The global connected device market continues to grow, according to the latest number from IDC reseach. According to the report, shipments of PCs, tablets, and smartphones as a collective grew 27 percent annualy in the third quarter of 2012, hitting a record 303.6 million shipments valued at $140.4 billion dollars. 

Report: Dish to Sell Mobile Phones at Blockbuster Stores

Dish Network will start selling mobile phones from Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile in its Blockbuster video rental stores, according to a report from Bloomberg that cites people with "knowledge of the matter." The plan is an extension of Dish's current mobile phone sales through Blockbuster's website.  

De la Vega: Record Q4 Device Sales

AT&T is moving more devices than expected in the fourth quarter, according to comments from Ralph de la Vega, president and CEO of AT&T Mobility. Speaking this morning at the UBS Investor conference, De la Vega said AT&T is headed for record fourth quarter smartphone sales. AT&T has already sold 6.4 million smartphones in the first two months, with December sales still to be recorded.
