After having been an iPhone user since the launch of the 3Gs, I wanted to test the other operating systems on the market. I had no problem leaving the Android-based S5 behind, but I have to admit that when iPhone launch day came around, I was a little hesitant to give up the Lumia 1020.
Samsung today announced its second annual developer conference and this year the company is expanding the event to three days. On November 11 through 13 at Moscone West in San Francisco, Samsung will be hosting 90 sessions ranging on topics like smart health, wearables, virtual reality, mobile and smart home.
Samsung Electronics Co., which faces a slowdown in emerging market smartphone sales, will release its long-delayed Tizen-powered handset in India before the end of this year, a report said Monday. Samsung's first Tizen-based device will be launched in November in India, said Tarun Malik, director of Samsung's Media Solutions Center in Southwest Asia, in an interview with Economic Times.
SAN FRANCISCO – Qualcomm released an SDK for its Vuforia augmented reality (AR) platform. The Vuforia SDK for Digital Eyewear is designed specifically to work with Samsung’s Oculus-powered Gear VR, the Epson Moverio BT-200, and the ODG R-7.
How many more artists must cash in credibility to hitch their wagon to a smartphone star? How many more manufacturers must package inessential music with their hero phones? The answer remains unclear but until the practice stops, complaints about unauthorized downloads and privacy invasion will continue to steal some thunder from perfectly good smartphones.
Samsung announced the Galaxy Note Edge phone, which has a side display for quicker access to the flashlight, Twitter, news and other apps. It also showed off a new Galaxy Note 4 phone and a virtual-reality headset for the phone called Gear VR to watch concerts or play games.
The Galaxy Note Edge was announced at a trade show in Berlin on Wednesday, alongside the new Galaxy Note 4 phone, which lacks the side screen, and a virtual-reality headset called Gear VR. They are due for release this fall, in time for holiday shopping, and aim to compete with Apple's new iPhones due to be unveiled next week.
Samsung today unveiled the Gear S, a smartwatch with a 2-inch curved Super AMOLED display (360 x 480) and a 3G connection allowing it to make calls without the need for a smartphone. Users will have the option to switch between Bluetooth and cellular in order to sync the watch with a phone. The Tizen-based watch also packs an on-screen keyboard for responding to alerts and messages and enhanced S Voice functionality.
Wednesday's rebuff comes nearly four months after a jury awarded Apple Inc. $119 million in damages for Samsung's infringements on technology used in the trend-setting iPhone. The amount was well below the $2.2 billion in damages that Apple had been seeking in the latest round of legal wrangling between the world's two leading smartphone makers since the tussle began four years ago.
Of course, you can simply install Nook and Kindle reading apps on an iPad or a non-Nook Galaxy. The iPad even comes with iBooks installed. Are reading-centric tablets really a better way to experience the printed word? Let's take a closer look.
The move looks smart especially as competitors like Apple are ramping up their connected home efforts and Google is putting up $3.2 billion for connected home companies like Nest Labs. But what exactly did Samsung get when it bought SmartThings and how will it factor into the Korean giant’s foray into the smart house?
Samsung is soon releasing a Multi-Charging Wall Charger that allows users to charge up to three micro USB devices at once. The Multi-charging cable optimizes the total charge across all three devices, dividing the 2A charge evenly. In other words, if you’re only charging two devices, power flows faster to each than if you were charging three simultaneously.
The device features 8GB of onboard storage (expandable to 32GB), a 3-megapixel rear-facing camera, and a 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera. The Galaxy Tab 4 Nook goes on sale today for $179 and includes $200 in free content, including some pre-selected books, TV shows and other media.

Samsung snapped up SmartThings, an open-platform connected home company. The companies did not disclose the terms of the deal but Recode cited sources saying the price tag for SmartThings came in around $200 million. That total matches up with reports that surfaced in July about Samsung’s possible bid for the home automation company.
Samsung today took the wraps off the Galaxy Alpha, a 4.7-inch smartphone that eschews the OEM’s propensity toward plastic in favor of a metal-framed design. The Alpha’s 6.7 millimeter-thick body and 115 gram heft bring it in well under the size and weight of Samsung’s current flagship, the Galaxy S5. Of course the Alpha’s display is smaller than the S5’s 5.1-inch screen.
That's starting to change with Android devices, though. Windows tablets do let you run multiple apps side by side, but Windows phones do not. The iPhone and iPad don't, either. In this installment of A Closer Look, I assess some of the Android devices that offer limited multitasking. These approaches aren't as smooth as what I'm used to on Mac and Windows personal computers, but they are a start.
"Samsung and Apple have agreed to drop all litigation between the two companies outside the United States," the South Korean company said in a statement. "This agreement does not involve any licensing arrangements, and the companies are continuing to pursue the existing cases in U.S. courts."

Samsung has stumbled in its efforts to make even a small move away from Android. Earlier this week, it delayed the release of the first smartphone powered by Tizen, its own mobile operating system, just two months after announcing a launch date. It did not give a future schedule.
IDC estimates Samsung shipped 74.3 million smartphones in the second quarter, down 3.9 percent from the 77.3 million it moved in the same quarter last year. Samsung's overall market share came in at 25.2 percent in the second quarter, down from 32.3 percent during the same period last year.
In a brief statement, Samsung said the postponement is to further enhance the Tizen "ecosystem," which encompasses developers, consumers and devices using the mobile OS. The delay is a blow to Samsung's push to reduce reliance on Google's Android operating system, which powers Samsung's Galaxy smartphones and tablets.
LG executives said solid sales of handset devices will help its mobile division stay profitable during the fall and winter, even as Apple Inc. is expected to unveil a bigger iPhone and Samsung Electronics Co. is likely to release new models.
