Nokia will ship its final Symbian handsets this summer and formally put all its eggs in the Windows Phone basket. The Financial Times said the Finnish phone maker is not expected to announce that Symbian shipments have stopped as to not affect the sales of existing stocks of Symbian phones.

The colorful 501, running the Finnish company’s Asha platform, reverses a current smartphone trend by sporting a relatively small 3-inch display. With fairly slow max GSM data speeds, the 501 isn’t designed to do much heavy surfing, but it’s good for basic communications/social functions, equipped with Wi-Fi and has good battery life.

Apple moved 27.4 million iPhone 5 units globally in the fourth quarter of 2012, more than any other smartphone and good enough to claim 12.6 percent of the world smartphone market share. Samsung announced a series of smart feature phones, Rex, and have unveiled four models; the Rex 60, 70, 80 and 90. All four phones come with Samsung’s Touchwiz UI on top of touchscreens, with the 70, 80, and 90 featuring capacitive and the 60 featuring resistive technology.

Nokia Protesting Indian Tax Investigation

Nokia is protesting an investigation into its tax payments in Indian. Reuters reports that Indian officials are looking into allegations that the Finnish handset maker skipped out on $558 million in taxes. The Reuters report adds that British mobile provider Vodafone is similarly under investigation and trying to settle a $2 billion tax dispute.

Nokia Posts $10.7B Q4 Revenue, Proposes No Dividend

Nokia put up fourth quarter 2012 revenue of around $10.7 billion on an earnings per share of $0.08, both of which beat analyst estimates for the quarter. The revenue marked a 20 percent decrease anually but an 11 percent increase over the previous quarter.
