Apple is asking its manufacturers to make 70-80 million iPhones ahead of approaching launch of new 4.7- and 5.5-inch models of its smartphone, according to the Wall Street Journal. The initial order reports mark a huge increase of the 50-60 million units Apple ordered ahead of last year’s launch of the iPhone 5S and 5C.
Tablets ruled the quarter. The company added 304,000 postpaid phone net additions and 1.15 million postpaid tablets. At the end of the quarter, smartphones accounted for nearly 75 percent of retail postpaid customer phone base, up from 72 percent in first-quarter 2014.

Verizon over the weekend added the iPad and Android tablets to its Edge early upgrade program. “We’ve had other tablet payment plans in the past, but now we’re focused on Edge,” a Verizon spokesperson told Wireless Week when asked about why tablets are just coming to Edge.

But it said all of that is done at the device level and it is not tracking end users. It also said that tracking a phone's location using GPS takes too long and would not result in a satisfying user experience.

After receiving 1,300 proposals, Google is announcing five nonprofits Wednesday that'll get a free pair of the glasses, a $25,000 grant and support from developers. Classroom Champions of Jacksonville, Florida, will use the glasses to create first-person educational videos by Paralympic athletes for high-need schools.
The gang of heavily armed men captured eight plant employees as they neared the factory in a company bus just before midnight, said civil police in Sao Paulo state. They stole the workers' ID tags and took two of them with them as hostages as they entered the factory in the college town of Campinas. The remaining six employees were taken to an unknown location.

If Android and the many OEM partners can find a way to close the fragmentation gap, then Android Wear could become as pervasive as its parent software. Of course, if someone releases a commercially viable smartwatch with its own cellular connection, then fragmentation ceases to be a phone-watch pairing issue and becomes a standalone smartwatch problem.
