Cisco Announces Intent to Cut 6,000 Jobs

The San Jose, California-based company on Wednesday reported a 1 percent decline in profit, to $2.25 billion, as revenue dipped to $12.36 billion from $12.42 billion. Its adjusted earnings for the three months ended July 26, its fiscal fourth quarter, came to 55 cents per share, which was two cents more than analysts expected, according to Zacks Investment Research.

Report: Non-PC Devices Will Account for 57% of IP Traffic by 2018

Mobile devices on Wi-Fi, not cellular, will generate 61 percent of IP traffic by 2018. Wi-Fi will be 49 percent and cellular will be 12 percent. Fixed traffic will be only 39 percent of total IP traffic by 2018. In comparison, Wi-Fi was 41 percent; cellular was 3 percent; and fixed was 56 percent in 2013.

Cisco to Invest $1 Billion in New Global Cloud Platform

Cisco Monday announced plans to invest over $1 billion over the next two years in a global cloud for delivering applications and services. The "Intercloud," as Cisco is calling it, will be hosted across a global network of Cisco and partner data centers.


Cisco: 11x Increase in Global Mobile Data Traffic by 2018

By 2018 global mobile data traffic will increase 11-fold and hit an annual run rate of 190 exabytes, according to a new data forecast from Cisco. The report puts monthly mobile data usage at 2.6 exabytes for 2014 and predicts that usage will increase more than six-fold by 2018 when global mobile traffic climbs to 15.9 exabytes monthly.

Google, Cisco Sign Patent Cross-Licensing Agreement

Google and Cisco have signed a “long-term” patent cross-licensing agreement. The companies said the agreement will increase the value taken from their respective portfolios and, more importantly, diffuse some of the risk for future litigation. Google’s new agreement with Cisco comes shortly after the company entered similar agreements with Samsung and Ericsson related to GSM, UMTS, and LTE standards for both networks and handsets.

Cisco to Acquire Mobile Startup Intucell

Cisco today announced plans to buy Israeli company Intucell for approximately $475 million in cash and retention-based incentives. Intucell provides self-optimizing network (SON) software to mobile carriers, which allows them to "plan, configure, manage, optimize and heal cellular networks automatically, according to real-time changing network demands."
