Apple Working with Banks, Retailers on NFC-Capable Mobile Wallet

Citing people familiar with the matter, Bloomberg reports that when paired with Apple's Touch ID fingerprint reader, users will be able to pay securely for items by simply placing their finger on the home button. While rumors of NFC capability have preceded the launch of the last three iPhone models, Apple has yet to include the functionality in its smarpthones.

Samsung Buys SmartThings for Reported $200 Million

Samsung snapped up SmartThings, an open-platform connected home company. The companies did not disclose the terms of the deal but Recode cited sources saying the price tag for SmartThings came in around $200 million. That total matches up with reports that surfaced in July about Samsung’s possible bid for the home automation company.

Apple Nixes Toxic Chemicals from iPhone

A four-month investigation at 22 factories found no evidence that benzene and n-hexane endangered the roughly 500,000 people who work at the plants, according to Apple. No traces of the chemicals were detected at 18 of the factories and the amounts found at the other four factories fell within acceptable safety levels, the Cupertino, California, company said.

Samsung today took the wraps off the Galaxy Alpha, a 4.7-inch smartphone that eschews the OEM’s propensity toward plastic in favor of a metal-framed design. The Alpha’s 6.7 millimeter-thick body and 115 gram heft bring it in well under the size and weight of Samsung’s current flagship, the Galaxy S5. Of course the Alpha’s display is smaller than the S5’s 5.1-inch screen.

A breakdown released Tuesday by Apple Inc. showed 54 percent of the company's technology jobs in the U.S. are filled by whites and another 23 percent by Asians. Men make up 80 percent of Apple's technology workforce throughout the world. The iPhone and iPad maker didn't provide racial statistics for its global workforce of 98,000 employees.

Apple will hold an iPhone event on Sept. 9, according to Re/code. The date, falling on a traditional Tuesday for iPhone announcements, comes from John Paczkowski. Last year, his colleague Ina Fried—back when both worked at All Things D—correctly reported the iPhone 5S and 5C would be announced on Sept. 10. The current iPhone models were then released on Sept. 20.

Report: Xiaomi Rises to Top Smartphone Maker in China

According to new numbers from research firm Canalys, Xiaomi has risen from being a niche player to become the leading smart phone vendor in the world’s largest market, overtaking Samsung in volume terms in second quarter. Canalys reports that Xiaomi grabbed a 14 percent share of the Chinese market, on the back of 240 percent annual growth.

FreedomPop Selling LTE Tablets with Free Voice, Text, and Unique Numbers

FreedomPop today announced it will begin selling LTE tablets and offering free voice, text and data services to go along with them. In addition, the MVNO will offer a unique phone number for tablets, which it said will expand the tablet’s phone capabilities and open it up to services like WhatsApp that require a phone number.

IDC estimates Samsung shipped 74.3 million smartphones in the second quarter, down 3.9 percent from the 77.3 million it moved in the same quarter last year. Samsung's overall market share came in at 25.2 percent in the second quarter, down from 32.3 percent during the same period last year. 

EU Regulators Approve Apple's $3B Beats Deal

Apple sold 35.2 million iPhones during its third quarter, just missing analyst estimates but handily beating the June quarter record of 31.2 million sold during the year-ago quarter. The 13.3 million iPads Apple sold during the quarter fell below estimates.
