BlackBerry today said that it has entered into an agreement to acquire Secusmart GmbH, a provider of voice and data encryption, as well as anti-eavesdropping solutions for government organizations, enterprises and service providers in Germany and internationally.

The transaction is subject to the usual regulatory approvals and no financial details of the deal were provided.

John Chen, Executive Chairman and CEO for BlackBerry, said in a statement that the acquisition of Secusmart underscores his company's focus on addressing growing security costs and threats ranging from individual privacy to national security.

"This acquisition bolsters our security solutions with leading voice and data encryption and anti-eavesdropping technologies, and furthers BlackBerry's security leadership in end-to-end mobile solutions," Chen said.

BlackBerry and Secusmart have previously partnered to offer Secusmart's technology to customers. Last year, the SecuSUITE for BlackBerry 10 was selected by Germany's Federal Office for Information Security for classified communications for the country's public officials.

BlackBerry continues to refocus its business on software and services, with an emphasis on its device management and security offerings. The company's device unit continues to lost market share. According to ComScore's most recent numbers, BlackBerry now controls just 2.5 percent of the U.S. smartphone market.
