AT&T today announced it is raising the data allowances for its GoPhone smartphone plans and giving those customers the ability to use their phones as hotspots.

The $60 unlimited talk and text plan hikes its LTE data allowance up to 2.5 GB from the previous 2 GB. The $40 plan with 500 minutes plus unlimited text now gives customers 500 MB of LTE, doubling the 250 MB it previously came with.

The new rates go into effect April 25. AT&T said existing $40 and $60 GoPhone customers will automatically receive the new data allowances.

In addition to the revamps, AT&T is rolling out to Walmart stores a new $45 plan with 1 GB of LTE.

For feature phone users on GoPhone, AT&T is introducing a new $45 unlimited everything plan—including unlimited texts to Mexico—that gives customers 2 GB of 3G data before throttling back to 128Kbps for the remainder of the billing cycle.

Phonenews.com Wednesday reported about the update and said that in addition to the increased data and hotspot capability, GoPhone iPhone users were now able to use FaceTime over a cellular connection.
