Apple Takes Siri to Automobiles with CarPlay

Apple's new CarPlay system will offer driver's access to their iPhone via Siri-based voice controls.Apple is formally making its way into car dashboards with today's launch of CarPlay. The system will initially launch in high-end vehicles from Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo. 

CarPlay leverage's Apple's virtual assistant Siri to give iPhone users a hands-free way to make calls, view maps, listen to music and access messages. Users can control CarPlay from the car’s native interface or push-and-hold the voice control button on the steering wheel to activate Siri.

Apple said CarPlay will also offer turn-by-turn directions and be able to anticipate destinations based on recent trips via contacts, emails or texts. From that information, CarPlay can also provide routing instructions, traffic conditions and ETA. 

Apple said additional manufacturers will be implementing the system in the future, including: BMW Group, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai Motor Company, Jaguar Land Rover, Kia Motors, Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan Motor Company, PSA Peugeot Citroën, Subaru, Suzuki and Toyota Motor Corp. 

CarPlay is available as an update to iOS 7 and works with Lightning-enabled iPhones, including iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c and iPhone 5. CarPlay will be available in select cars shipping in 2014.
