BlackBerry Goes Big with New Z30

As tepid rumors of a BlackBerry buyout continue to swirl, the Canadian OEM is pushing forward with its BB10 devices and rolling out its new bigger hero phone, the Z30.

The Z30 trumps the Z10’s 4.2-inch screen with its relatively massive 5-inch Super AMOLED display. The Z30 will also ship with BlackBerry 10.2, as well as a healthy 2880 mAh battery. The handset sports new audio technology called Natural Sound that will come out of stereo speakers, a set up to rival the HTC One’s BoomSound.

Updates to the BB10 firmware include BBM message previews that will now prompt on-screen and allow users to respond/ignore without having to leave the current application.

All of this plus some antenna tweaks equal out to a more intriguing handset than the Z10, which by all accounts floundered in the consumer market. But slapping a 5-inch screen on the Z30 was a wise move as larger Android phones have proved there’s a market for oversized devices. One of the biggest gripes against BlackBerry’s rival Apple was Cupertino’s reluctance to go bigger than four inches with its new iPhones.

The Z30 will begin hitting retailers and carriers in the U.K. and Middle East as early as next week while other regions won’t see the device until the holidays.

BlackBerry last week saw a slight stock boost on rumors that former director Prem Watsa was gathering billions of dollars in backing from Canada Pension Plan Investment Board to take the company private. The company could be in line for some more good news if the promising new Z30 performs well next week.
