After reporting in March slower-than-expected sales of its Wii U console, Nintendo has announced it will push mobile apps to the box.

The Japan Times reports that Nintendo will begin offering conversion software to application developers in hopes that they will begin to produce smartphone games that can also be played on the Wii U, the follow-up to the company’s ultra-popular Wii motion-sensing console.

A shortage of popular titles for the Wii U has been cited as a major reason why Nintendo posted a second consecutive annual operating loss.

The Wii U controller features a 6.2-inch touch screen, making it a good fit for many smartphone and tablet games so long as the conversion software can ensure the applications will run smoothly.

The report also said that Nintendo will still focus on making new software as well.

According to Canalys’ App Interrogator research, App downloads across the four leading digital storefronts totaled more than 13.4 billion in the first quarter of 2013, representing an 11 percent increase quarterly.
