Inmarsat has formed a long-term deal with Cisco for new satellite services. Cisco will provide a services delivery platform for Inmarsat's planned Global Xpress platform, and build a router that will incorporate both the Global Xpress network and Inmarsat's current BGAN network. The products are set for launch on the hybrid Ka-band and L-band network in 2014. Cisco will build and operate the network on a fully managed basis before transferring it to Inmarsat.
Wi-Fi router maker Ruckus Wireless filed Friday for an initial public offering. The company placed a $100 million estimate on the stock sale, but said the number was used solely to determine fees. It has not yet determined how many shares will be offered or the price range for the stock.
Vringo is following through on its new strategy to cash in on the patents market with a lawsuit against ZTE. The U.K. complaint alleges ZTE phones, base stations and base station controllers violate Vringo's patents. The suit is Vringo's first since it kicked off its intellectual property business through a merger with Innovate/Protect.
The NFC Payments USA conference is set to roll later this month with speakers from Barclaycard, Bank of America, PayPal, T-Mobile, AT&T, Best Buy, Verizon Wireless, Samsung, MasterCard, VISA, Capital One, CIBC and Citibank. NFC-based mobile payments will be a key focus of this year's event, set to run Oct. 29-30 in Boston.
