When JK Shin landed in Berlin this week from Seoul, he was no doubt hoping for some better press than what he received over the last several weeks as Apple and Samsung duked it out before a judge and jury in a Silicon Valley U.S. district court.

Shin, the head of the Samsung's mobile-phone business, was the author of a 2010 internal memo that was at the center of Apple's claim that Samsung infringed on its iPhone and iPad patents and designs. A jury on Friday agreed with Apple, awarding the company $1.05 billion, pending Judge Lucy Koh's assessment of damages and the appeals process.
