Even as Apple preps the release of its own maps and turn-by-turn navigation in iOS 6, social traffic and navigation app Waze announced today via its official blog that it has 20 million registered users, with 10 million signing on in the past 6 months.
"This month alone, 1.8 million Wazers have joined the community...Equally impressive, to date, over 3.2 billion miles have been driven with Waze," the company wrote on its blog.
The Israel-based company started back in 2009.
Waze is a free community-based navigation application that allows users to collect and report real-time road and traffic conditions and share them with a larger community of Waze users. The application is dependent on interaction from its users. The more the network of users reports and uses the mobile app, which is available for iOS and Android, the more accurate and detailed the system becomes.
In March of this year, Waze announced that it had partnered with South African vehicle tracking provider Mix Telematics. MiX provided its base map to Waze to give it a head-start in launching in South Africa. The pre-mapped road data should increase adoption of Waze by South Africans.
