MobileIron is gearing up to release what it calls the “first complete security and management foundation” for Mobile IT to make the transition to apps-based computing.
The MobileIron Application Delivery Network (ADN) lets Mobile IT deliver apps of any size to any number of devices without negatively affecting the corporate network, explains Ojas Rege, vice president of strategy.
A few years ago, a 2MB app was rare, but now that 1GB apps are common, especially for sales forces, enterprises need more firepower to handle all those apps. MobileIron says its system offloads the actual download of the apps onto a secure global backbone, tightly integrated with the MobileIron Apps@Work storefront.
“We’ve, in essence, taken the app storefront and scaled it up to handle application downloads that you normally see in big app stores,” he says. It will be available early in the second half of this year for a monthly fee per device.
To address all those documents sent via email, MobileIron is offering Docs@Work, with end-to-end security for ActiveSync email attachments and SharePoint content. All email attachments are encrypted by MobileIron before they reach the device.
MobileIron says that within the native iOS email experience, only Docs@Work has the ability to decrypt and view the email attachments. Unauthorized third-party apps are blocked from accessing them. The service will be available near the end of the summer.
While the majority of enterprises are using iOS, MobileIron also will be offering App Connect for Android, which includes three components: advanced app wrapping technology to encapsulate the app without developer intervention; integration with core security policies and groups already established through MobileIron and AD/LDAP; and segmentation of personal and professional apps data on the device.
MobileIron says this essentially de-fragments Android for the enterprise, so any version of the OS can be managed. Pricing will be announced later this summer.
Founded in 2009, MobileIron on May 29 announced its $40 million Series E mezzanine financing round, bringing the company’s total funding to $97 million. Part of the funding is being used to drive product innovation, with groups like its recently formed MobileIron Labs.
Just last month, Gartner identified MobileIron as a leader in its Magic Quadrant for Mobile Device Management (MDM), along with AirWatch, Fiberlink, Zenprise and Good Technology.
