eBay named David Marcus, founder and CEO of Zong, as president of PayPal effective April 2. PayPal bought Zong in August 2011.
Since the acquisition, Marcus has been vice president of Mobile for PayPal and helped lead the company’s mobile payments volume growth and the introduction of PayPal Here, PayPal’s answer to Square. PayPal Here includes a free app and encrypted thumb-sized card reader that turns an iPhone into a mobile payments solution. The company will soon add support for Android.
Marcus reports to eBay President and CEO John Donahoe and succeeds Scott Thompson, who left the company in January. "David is the right leader for PayPal," Donahoe said in a press release. "He is a successful technology entrepreneur with a passion for great products that engage and delight customers. David leads with a founder's perspective. He will bring start-up energy to PayPal's unmatched global reach and digital payments capabilities.”
