Qualcomm has promoted Steve Mollenkopf, head of its CDMA chip business, as president and COO.
The appointment was part of a broader executive shuffle that moved current president Steve Altman, who held the post for the past six years, to a vice chairman position. Altman will keep his place on Qualcomm's executive committee, where he will advise the company's key initiatives and overall strategy.
Qualcomm also shifted Derek Aberle to the post of executive vice president and group president, where he will continue to serve as the president of Qualcomm's technology licensing division.
The changes go into effect Nov. 12.
Aberle will oversee Qualcomm's core services businesses, as well as its standards and global marketing activities. He will report to Mollenkopf. Altman and Mollenkopf will continue to report directly to CEO Paul Jacobs.
The COO post has been vacant since Len Lauer resigned in December 2009 to take the helm at Ireland-based color printing startup Memjet. Before Lauer, Sanjay Jha held the post before leaving in 2008 to become CEO of Motorola Mobility.
