HTC's smartphone sales continued their upward trend in June, rising 87 percent year-over-year to $1.56 billion.

The company's June sales momentum was down slightly from May, when sales more than doubled from 2010, but continued to be strong.

The Taiwan-based smartphone maker has benefitted from surging demand for Android devices.

AT&T said last week it would carry the HTC Status, also known as the company's Facebook phone, and Sprint began selling a 3D version of the HTC Evo smartphone as well as the company's Evo View tablet in late June.

HTC also has high-profile devices with Verizon Wireless, including the operator's first LTE smartphone, the HTC Thunderbolt.

The company has not released its full second-quarter results yet, but its CFO Winston Yung told Bloomberg that HTC's handset shipments met its 11 million target, with total sales more than doubling to $4.3 billion.

HTC's official second-quarter earnings are expected to be announced tomorrow, July 6.
