SoundHound, the sound recognition company, today announced a couple of updates to its music identification iPhone app that will offer users recommendations, as well as improved social sharing of songs.

The recommendation feature will be available exclusively to users of SoundHound's paid offering, SoundHound Infinity. The service recommends top picks for songs that users might enjoy based on the artist or song they are checking out. It is now available for download on Apple iOS devices as part of the new SoundHound version, 3.6.1.

Kathleen McMahon, vice president of sales and marketing for the company, says that the new recommendation feature can lead users to a richer musical experience. "For instance, you might hear and identify a song by a Brazilian artist you don't usually listen to and the next thing you know you're listening to a whole a collection of recommendations in a style that maybe wasn't previously familiar," McMahon says.

Users can get instant access to recommended songs just by speaking a song title or artist name into SoundHound's instant voice search. SoundHound generates recommendations through a proprietary engine that weights SoundHound's data from categories such as, "similar artist," "underplayed" and "hottest."

The latest update also adds improved social sharing, which includes "multi-sharing" capabilities. Multi-sharing enables single-tap posting to both Twitter and Facebook, as well as optional auto-share and comment personalization.

Since December of last year, SoundHound has seen a 219 percent increase in share traffic. Both Premium and Free users will have access to these features.

McMahon said it's been quite a year for SoundHound, as the company did away with monthly limits for its free service, which amounted to a complete overhaul of the company's business model. Users of SoundHound's free app can now take advantage of unlimited song identifications in an ad-supported environment.
