LG Electronics yesterday announced that worldwide sales of its Optimus One Android smartphone have hit 1 million units 40 days after the phone's initial launch. The phone is now available in most of Europe and Asia-Pacific countries.

In the United States, the Optimus One is also known as Optimus S (Sprint) and Optimus T (T-Mobile USA) with the Vortex for Verizon to be launched on Nov. 18.

The Optimus comes running the Android 2.2 (Froyo), the latest version of the OS and has received generally positive reviews for a mid-range smarpthone. The Optimus One features a 3.2-inch touchscreen and incorporates a unique LG-designed UI, along with a camera that features face tracking and smile shot.

"The versatile, powerful LG Optimus One was designed to provide an easy transition into the world of smartphones and as these numbers demonstrate, there is obviously a strong demand for this type of device," said Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of LG Electronics, in a statement

One of the first smartphones to launch with Google's latest operating system, the Optimus One allows for up to three times faster Internet browsing, Web page loading  and multi-tasking.

With the global rollout still under way, LG said Optimus One soon will be available via 120 carriers and partners. The company expects the phone to be the first of its devices to sell 10 million units.
