Android users can now make Skype calls over 3G and Wi-Fi. According to a release today from Skype., the new app will run on Android OS version 2.1 or above.

Skype for Android is downloadable for free from the Android Market or consumers can visit to find out more details about how to get the application. Skype for Android allows users to make free Skype-to-Skype calls over Wi-Fi or 3G, make low rate Skype calls to landline or mobile phones and send and receive instant messages to one or a group of friends on Skype.

"With the addition of Android, we are pleased that Skype is now available on three of the most popular mobile platforms today: Android, iOS and Symbian," Mark Douglas, Product Manager of Android, said in the press release.

Skype for Android, which works on Android OS 2.1 or above, has been tested successfully by Skype on HTC Desire, HTC Legend, Google Nexus One, Motorola Milestone XT720, and Motorola Milestone. The company says the app may work on other Android phones but won't guarantee full functionality or compatibility. Additionally, Skype says that it is aware of some problems with the Samsung Galaxy S and has plans to address those in the future.

Skype yesterday announced that it would replace CEO Josh Silverman with Tony Bates, formerly a senior vice president and general manager of enterprise, commercial and small business division for Cisco Systems. Bates will start at the end of October.
