Google CEO Eric Schmidt today told journalists at Techonomy, a conference being held in Lake Tahoe, Calif., that the company is activating 200,000 Android units a day, according to a post on Tech Crunch. That would certainly mesh with the rest of the sensational Android news hitting the wires this past week.
Both Nielsen and NPD Group this week published numbers that showed Google's mobile OS growing at a rate the exceeds both Apple and BlackBerry. Today, iSuppli jumped on the bandwagon with numbers that predict Android will surpass iPhone in market share by 2012.
According to iSuppli's calculations, Android will be used in 75 million smartphones by 2012, up from 5 million in 2009. Meanwhile, iOS usage will amount to 62 million in 2012, up from 25 million in 2009.
That would give Android 19.4 percent of the global smartphone OS market in 2012, up from 2.7 percent in 2009. In contrast, iSuppli predicts that Apple's iOS for the iPhone will see its share shrink to 15.9 percent in 2012, down from 13.8 percent in 2009.
"Android is taking the smartphone market by storm," said Tina Teng, senior analyst, wireless communications, for iSuppli, in a statement. "Cell phone OEMs representing all tiers of the industry have committed to support Android, including Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, LG, Huawei, AsusTek and ZTE," she said.
