Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) and Juniper Networks have received the regulatory OK for their joint venture that will offer a carrier Ethernet solution for mobile backhaul, business and residential broadband networks.

The JV was announced in June, after the companies earlier said they planned to deliver a unified carrier Ethernet solution.

The new company, incorporated in Amsterdam under the name Carrier Ethernet Solutions B.V., will be owned 60 percent by Juniper and 40 percent by NSN.

John Stewart, previously a vice president and general manager of the Mobility and Circuit Emulation Business Unit at Juniper Networks, will lead the joint venture company as CEO. Ton van den Boom, previously senior manager in finance and control from NSN, will take on the role of CFO.

In a press release, Stewart says the new company will offer "the industry's best unified Carrier Ethernet solution from metro access to aggregation, fully interoperable with IP/MPLS core and managed by Nokia Siemens Networks ‘point and click' network management system." Customers will be able to leverage the solution to offer new revenue-generating services while lowering transport costs and total cost of ownership, he added.

Plans call for the new solutions to be sold by both companies with a targeted introduction date of the first calendar quarter of 2010.

NSN also reports that 50 mobile operators are bringing their networks into the IP era with its solutions, making NSN a market leader in IP mobile backhaul networks. IP/Ethernet mobile backhaul can provide a more scalable solution at a cost that can be less than half of TDM-based backhaul, the company says, and it offers a smoother evolution path to LTE.

In more NSN news, the company appointed Ashish Chowdhary to lead the services business, effective Oct. 1, when the current head, Rajeev Suri, becomes CEO. Chowdhary, currently responsible for managed services, will join the company's executive board and be based in Noida, near New Delhi, India.
