Chip Could Reduce Femtocell Prices

DesignArt Networks said its newest WiMAX system-on-chip is tailored for use in low-cost, low-power femtocells.
Pricing is not disclosed, however, femtocells built with the DAN2200 can cost a vendor less than $100, DesignArt officials said. That’s because the processor, security, RF features and other components are integrated in the chip instead of requiring external chips.
The tight integration also helps bring system draw to less than 5W, although there is a limit of 25 simultaneous subscribers. Shipments are planned for early next year.
DesignArt released a more generic DAN2400 chip this summer and still plans an LTE version for next year, officials noted.
