The world of storage discs has been on fire for the last 18 months. Companies have been reducing the size of the discs and increasing the capacity. Now that capability has been unleashed on a handset. We all knew it was coming, so it seems worth mentioning that the first handset featuring 1 gigabyte of memory comes from South Korea. Calling it the Ultimate Jukebox, South Korea's second largest handset maker Pantech unveiled its IM-U110 handset with 1 gigabyte of flash memory. According to the company, the memory facility means that users can save roughly 200 MP3 songs or more than 1,000 high resolution pictures. It isn't exactly the iPod, but it is the highest capacity in handsets at the moment. Knowing how eager Cingular Wireless, Sprint Nextel and Verizon Wireless are to sell many tunes here in the United States, it won't be long before high capacity flash memory hits a handset near you.
