Nortel and Sierra Wireless completed over-the-air test calls using EV-DO Revision A wireless technology.

The calls were completed using Nortel Rev. A equipment and newly introduced products from Sierra Wireless: the AirCard 595 and MC5725 PCI Express Mini Card. The AirCard 595 wireless wide area network card is a Type II PC card that is not only compatible with Revision A networks, but also with current EV-DO networks and CDMA 1X networks. The MC5725 is an embedded module that will be backward compatible with current EV-DO and CDMA 1X networks, as well as Rev. A networks.

"The ability for operators to deliver new, revenue-generating services with increased network intelligence enabled by EV-DO Revision A will provide a powerful competitive advantage," said Doug Wolff, vice president and general manager, CDMA, Nortel, in a prepared statement.

The calls, according to the telecom equipment providers, prove the commercial viability of the technology to power next-generation broadband wireless services.
