InnoPath Software has snapped up Openwave Systems' mobile device management (MDM) product line for an undisclosed sum. InnoPath views the purchase as a way to expand its value proposition to wireless operators and handset manufacturers.

InnoPath asserts its new MDM platform will support firmware over-the-air (FOTA), Configuration Management, Diagnostics Management and Feature Upgrade applications. Both companies view their separate technologies as complementary.

InnoPath believes the combined offering will "streamline MDM offerings and speed interoperability between handsets and platforms."

As part of the purchase agreement, InnoPath and Openwave have forged a multi-year reseller agreement, which calls for Openwave to sell InnoPath's solutions to its customer base.

InnoPath also announced the appointment of John Fazio as its new president and CEO. At his new post, Fazio will be tasked with the overall strategic direction and management of the company. He comes to InnoPath from Venturi Wireless, where he served as president and CEO.

Fazio replaces outgoing CEO Lousheng Peng, a company co-founder, who will remain at the company as chairman and chief technology officer.
