T-Mobile USA is updating its Sidekick line of handsets, adding a high-end model called the Sidekick LX as well as the first Sidekick made by Motorola.
The Sidekick LX's screen has more than twice the resolution of previous sidekick models; it's also slimmer with a more elegant design. The Sidekick LX, made by Sharp, is also the first Sidekick that allows for pictures to be sent along in text messages. For Web surfing, the browser has been updated for better page rendering and now includes JavaScript support. And the LX's music player now supports AAC and WMA files, as well as MP3s.
The Sidekick LX is expected to go on sale October 17th for $299 with a 2-year contract.
T-Mobile also announced the Sidekick Slide, the first Sidekick made by Motorola, rather than Sharp. The Slide also breaks away from the trademark swivel screen, instead the screen slides up to reveal the keyboard. The slide is slimmer and lighter than any other Sidekick model (and the screen is smaller), but otherwise it includes many of the same updated features of the Sidekick LX, which has a media player but it has been disabled. T-Mobile said the Slide will go on sale November 7th, for $199 with a 2-year contract.
