Starting today, select Sprint customers in Denver and Indianapolis can purchase the Airave, a base station that will boost cellular signals indoors and direct calls over a broadband Internet connection to allow for unlimited calling at home. The Airave is manufactured by Samsung and retails at Sprint stores for $49.99. The service will cost $15 per month for an individual and $30 per month for families, in addition to their regular wireless plan.
"With the Airave, Sprint is delivering an enhanced in-home coverage solution that's simple to access, low in cost and compatible with any Sprint phone," said Ajit Bhatia, director of product management for Sprint, in a company statement. "In addition, with unlimited in-home wireless calling, the Airave makes it even more convenient for customers to rely on their Sprint phones at home."
Sprint plans to increase the service to Nashville and the rest of Denver and Indianapolis later this year, with plans to launch the service nationwide in 2008.
This is the second converged cellular/wireless in-home solution to launch this year; T-Mobile launched the hotspot@home service in select markets in June. While T-Mobile's system reroutes calls through a Wi-Fi router, it only works with certain handsets, Sprint's solution claims to be compatible with any phone.
