Visa Introduces New Cloud Payment Solutions Suite

Visa is replacing the traditional 16-digit account information found on standard magnetic strip cards with “tokens,” which the company said can be processed without sharing account information. Tokens can be stored on devices, within mobile applications and web-based applications. Because they’re based on existing ISO standards, tokens can be processed by the technology merchants and financial institutions already have in place.

LoopPay invented something called Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) technology which leverages existing point-of-sale infrastructure to receive contactless payments from mobile devices of all kinds with no hardware changes required by merchants.

Unloading of Handset Division Boosts Nokia's Forecast

Nokia Networks said that its forecast has improved on operational efficiencies gained from the sale of its handset unit to Microsoft. The company expects underlying profitability for Networks to be at or slightly above its long term target range of 5 to 10 percent for the full-year 2014.

Vuzix Corporation, a supplier of video eyewear and smart glasses products in the consumer, commercial and entertainment markets, today announced it has signed a major deal with Lenovo to launch the M100 Smart Glasses into China. The wearable product offering will be co-branded as a Vuzix/Lenovo solution and will be marketed across China as part of Lenovo's New Business Development brand.

Facebook 2Q Mobile Ad Revenue Jumps 67 Percent

Advertising revenue jumped 67 percent to $2.68 billion. Mobile ad revenue, a closely watched figure, was 1.66 billion, or 62 percent of Facebook's total advertising revenue for the quarter. In the first three months of the year, mobile ads accounted for 59 percent of Facebook's total ad revenue.

AT&T Adds Over 1M Subscribers, Sees Record Low Churn

AT&T added more than one million postpaid subscribers during its second quarter, calling it the strongest gain in five years. The subscriber growth came in due to more than 700,000 postpaid smartphone net adds and 366,000 postpaid tablet net adds. But AT&T’s tablet growth fell well short of the 1.15 million postpaid tablets Verizon added during the same quarter.

Sprint Partners with Google for Enterprise Cloud Push

Sprint has signed on to offer Google Apps for Business and serve as enterprise support for the cloud-based productivity suite. As a mobility reseller of Google Apps, Sprint will put its customer care, billing platform and device and network knowledge behind the offering. Besides selling varying deployment packages Sprint will offer add-ons like single sign-on.

NEW YORK (AP) — Target is introducing an app that lets users purchase items after scanning magazine ads with their smartphones. It's the latest offering from retailers looking to boost sales with the use of improving image-recognition technology.

Losses at Nokia cut 8 cents per share from earnings. Microsoft lost another net 3 cents on restructuring and tax-related items. Excluding those items, earnings hit 66 cents per share, beating the 60 cents expected by analysts polled by FactSet.

Apple Sets 3Q iPhone Sales Record, Sees iPad Sales Slip

Apple sold 35.2 million iPhones during its third quarter, just missing analyst estimates but handily beating the June quarter record of 31.2 million sold during the year-ago quarter. The 13.3 million iPads Apple sold during the quarter fell below estimates. The total was down annually from 14.6 million.

Bluegrass Cellular Announces Timetable for LTE Network

Bluegrass Cellular will complete its LTE rollout by late next year the company announced in a press release today. Bluegrass lit up its first markets back in November of 2012, which was made possible through its participation in Verizon's rural LTE program.
