T-Mobile Becomes the "Un-Carrier," Will Sell iPhone 5 Starting April 12

T-Mobile introduced the new LTE network it is just beginning to switch on and the new no-contract plans that have already popped up on its website. CEO John Legere was there to bid goodbye to device subsidies as well as welcome Apple’s iPhone to his company’s device portfolio beginning April 12.

Carlson Wireless announced the launch of the first TV White Space (TVWS) trial in South Africa. Led by Google, the trial will test TVWS wireless broadband in ten schools across the Cape Town area. Carlson, the project's equipment vendor, Google and other project partners will attempt to show that broadband can be offered over white spaces without interfering with licensed spectrum holders.

British Teenage Whiz Strikes Deal With Yahoo

Seventeen-year-old Nick d'Aloisio, who dreamed up the idea for the content-shortening program when he was studying for his exams, said he was surprised by the deal. As with its other recent acquisitions, Yahoo didn't disclose how much it is paying for Summly, although British newspapers suggested the deal's value at several million dollars.

Sony’s Xperia ZL Comes to U.S. Without Carrier Support

Sony’s new Xperia ZL smartphone is now available for pre-sale via the company’s web store and will make its way to other online retailers soon. In a press release, Sony announced the unlocked phone will cost a $719 or $759 for the LTE version, a big price tag but one that won’t come with a carrier contract.

HTC hasn’t been “loud enough” and it plans to turn up the volume on its marketing efforts, starting by retiring its “Quietly Brilliant” tagline. Speaking with the Wall Street Journal, HTC CMO Benjamin Ho said the company’s new approach will be “bolder.”

T-Mobile Goes Live With New No-Contract Plans

T-Mobile’s new no-contract pricing plans are now live on the company’s website with plans starting at $50 for unlimited talk and text plus 500 MB of data. The plans add on $10 for each additional 2 GB and include mobile hotspot. The plans don’t include overage charges for surpassing the allotted 500 MB, instead opting to throttle back customers to 2G speeds once the limit is passed.

Dell Board Will Deal With Icahn, Blackstone

ROUND ROCK, Texas (AP) — Dell said Monday that a special board committee plans to negotiate with Blackstone Group and activist investor Carl Icahn over new acquisition bids for the computer maker that rival an offer of more than $24 billion from an investor group that includes founder Michael Dell.

AT&T announced today that the company’s first-quarter 2013 financial results will be released after the New York Stock Exchange closes on Tuesday, April 23, 2013. At 4:30 p.m. ET the same day, AT&T will host a conference call to discuss the results. The FCC informed the National Telecommunications and Information Administration of its plans to auction licenses in the 1695-1710 and 1755-1780 MHz bands as early as September 2014. The NTIA recently picked out the 1695-1710 MHz band of spectrum to be reallocated for non-federal use.
