BlackBerry VM-605

True, there are a few luxury cars out there that will conveniently pipe phone calls and music from your phone through your car’s speakers. A (slightly) cheaper alternative, though, is the BlackBerry VM-605 Visor Mount Speakerphone.

Formerly $79.99, Wirefly is now offering the VM-605 for just $39.99 (while supplies lasts).

Key Features

  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • Powerful on-board speaker for loud and clear calls
  • Sensitive microphone for enhanced call quality, even with background noise
  • Built-in FM transmitter (hear calls & listen to music through your car’s speakers)
  • Universal (works with most Bluetooth-enabled devices)

Brief Review

I’ve been driving around with the VM-605 for several months, and now usually leave my traditional Bluetooth earpiece at home. The device slides easily on and off your car’s sun visor, and comes with a car charger for easy charging on-the-go. While it is sometimes difficult to find a station that the FM transmitter can clearly broadcast to (I live in a big city with quite a bit of interference), the speaker on-board the device is impressively loud. I’ve never had a problem hearing callers, even with music on — and people on the other end have never reported having trouble hearing me. Battery life on the VM-605 also doesn’t disappoint. I was able to talk for hours on a long road trip on a single charge.

I was about as impressed with attempts to integrate mobile with this year's Super Bowl as I was with the Green Bay Packers’ effort during their NFC divisional playoff loss to the New York Giants.

In Other News: Patents

The tech industry may have had its attention focused on gadgets this week due to the annual hullaballoo at the 2012 International CES show in Las Vegas, but at least a few people were thinking about the patented inventions that make those electronics work.
