Clearwire recently stated that it won’t begin testing on WiMax 2.0 until next year, with possible implementation in 2012 or later. A Clearwire official also stated that though customers would support Clear’s choice to use either LTE or WiMax, the latter was chosen because it was available sooner.
This recent development show that there is concern at Clear regarding LTE. The difference in speed rates that both WiMax and LTE present are a major difference. LTE tests show upload/download speeds that are faster than most DSL land lines. WiMax will always have the different data transfer rates within the coverage area depending on the users location to the base station. There’s one LTE network up and running in Scandinavia.
Sprint has spent a lot of money prepping a national WiMax network. Clear got $2.8 billion in funding this past November to make WiMax work. The great question now will be can Verizon beat Clear to the two most important tech markets not serviced by either technology- San Francisco and New York? There have been rumblings about the possibility of setting up a WiMax network in and around Silicon Valley, near San Francisco. The challenge of putting up a WiMax network in the concrete jungle of New York is a major concern of engineers and technicians at the moment as well.
Being the number one telecommunications company in the U.S., Verizon backed LTE from the start and it will be interesting to see exactly where and when the first LTE network will be set up in the U.S.
All this comes after the news that the NTIA and RUS will begin accepting bids for an additional $4.8 billion for wireless broadband internet initiatives. There have also been developments with the building of smart grids – Sprint is a large supporter and Full Spectrum provides the service to utilities companies and is looking to grow its technology towards the public sector. Proxim contributed important technology to a smart grid build out in Venezuela. Maravedis released a report about the upcoming spectrum auction in Brazil and the possibilities of WiMax in the South Amer
