AT&T will begin offering a new, cheaper prepaid plan to its GoPhone customers on Sept. 18.
The new $25 monthly plan is half the price of the $50 plan AT&T currently offers to its prepaid subscribers and includes 250 voice minutes and unlimited SMS for 30 days. The $50 plan, which comes with all-you-can eat talk and text, will still be available.
In addition to the new plan, AT&T will begin offering an international calling package for its prepaid customers and has expanded GoPhone roaming to Canada.
"Being able to enhance roaming capabilities in Canada and offering affordable international long distance plans allow customers to enjoy the amenities of global travel with talk, messaging and data without ever having to worry about long-term commitments," Judy Cavalieri, vice president of AT&T's voice and prepaid products, said in a statement.
The $10 monthly international plan provides users with 250 minutes for landline calls to more than 50 countries. The plan also covers calls to mobile numbers in Canada and some other countries.
More information about the plans will be available at att.com/gophoneintLD starting Sept. 13.
Postpaid customers are AT&T's bread and butter, but today's announcement may indicate the operator is interested in increasing its presence in the popular prepaid market. AT&T added its first prepaid Android device in April, the LG Thrive.
AT&T's planned acquisition of T-Mobile USA would have given it an instant foothold in the prepaid space, but the deal hit a roadblock last month when the Department of Justice filed an antitrust suit to stop the merger from going through. AT&T has vowed to fight the suit.
