Hewlett-Packard (HP) announced big changes today, as the company confirms in a single press release that it’s considering a $10 billion acquisition of analytics company Autonomy Corporation; a spin-off of its PC division, and a discontinuation of all webOS devices, including the TouchPad tablet and Palm smartphones.
The company went on to say that it will "continue to explore options to optimize the value of webOS software going forward."
HP acquired the webOS mobile operating system when it bought Palm Inc. in April of 2010 for $1.2 billion.
While no mention was made of whether HP will continue making mobile devices around another operating system, today’s press release promised more details in its upcoming third-quarter earnings call scheduled today for 5 p.m. EST today.
HP reported preliminary results for the quarter, with revenue of $31.2 billion compared with $30.7 billion one year ago. The company also lowered its full-year forecast for the third time this year. HP now estimates full-year 2011 revenue will be approximately $127.2 billion to $127.6 billion, down from its previous estimate of $129 billion to $130 billion.
