RIM Boasts of 1M New Subs in EMEA

Research In Motion (RIM) said yesterday it had added 1 million new BlackBerry subscribers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa in less than three weeks.

In a post to its official Twitter account Thursday, RIM said, "Pow! @BlackBerry continues momentum across EMEA with 1 Million+ new subscribers added in less than 3 weeks. #teamblackberry ^CH"

The company did not provide any additional information about the reason for the increase.

RIM isn't set to release its second-quarter results until Sept. 15. Growth of the company's BlackBerry devices slowed in the first quarter and profits declined almost 10 percent to $695 million.

RIM's stock has been on a steady decline, dropping about 40 percent over the past year.

The BlackBerry maker has struggled to make its enterprise-focused smartphones relevant to consumers increasingly attracted to the iPhone and devices running Google's Android operating system.

The company has alienated many app developers and its new products have found limited traction in the key North American market amid competition from rival smartphones.

Last week, an anonymous "high-level" employee at RIM leaked a letter blasting the company's performance, saying RIM's executives had seriously mismanaged key decisions about products and software.

In reply, RIM said its executives are "fully aware of and aggressively addressing both the company's challenges and its opportunities."

  • EMEA is an important market region(s). However, the various stock exchanges around the world do not care. Further, it is all in the numbers, RIM's revenue is dropping steadily despite its growth in EMEA. I wonder if RIM is dumping product in EMEA just to boost its subsrcriber numbers - an old trick in the business.
RIM does not get it. The market that counts is in th eage bracket of 12 years to 30 years, the more important and emerging spender and user of media services.
This is tragic. RIM is in total denial.
