• Cellular South says it deployed a temporary mobile broadband cell site in Smithville, Miss., yesterday after the devastating tornado hit the small town in rural Monroe County. The temporary cell site will expand capacity and support the voice and high-speed data communication needs of residents, businesses and local and state disaster recovery teams who are working on clean up, damage assessments and recovery efforts. To donate $10 to the Red Cross relief efforts, customers can type the word "REDCROSS" and send it to 90999 via text message from their mobile devices.
• Brightpoint reported revenue of $1.1 billion for the first quarter of 2011, an increase of 40 percent compared to the first quarter of 2010 and slightly lower than the fourth quarter of 2010. The increase was primarily driven by growth in its distribution business due to the increased demand for smartphones and general increased availability of product compared to what was experienced in the prior year.
• Openwave Systems reported revenues for its third fiscal quarter were $38.9 million compared with $39.9 million in the prior quarter and $40.1 million in the same quarter in 2010.
• Wavelink Corporation announced support for managing iPads, iPhones and iPod Touches is now available as part of the Wavelink Avalanche web console, allowing companies to ensure that the mobile devices connected to their network are not only managed but are kept secure.
• BlackBerry Partners Fund has launched the fourth annual BlackBerry Partners Fund Developer Challenge. This year, developers of BlackBerry smartphone and BlackBerry PlayBook tablet applications can enter their applications in a series of competitions to win $3 million in prizes. Winners will be selected on a regional basis across four global regions – North America, Latin America, Europe/Middle East/Africa and Asia Pacific.
• PBS launched the SUPER WHY App for Android, the first application for the Android platform from the educational media brand for children. The app helps kids build literacy skills through immersive storybook adventures and is based on the preschool series from Out of the Blue Enterprises. The $2.99 app, which debuted on other mobile platforms last year, is now available for smartphones operating on Android 2.1 and above.
• Radio Frequency Systems (RFS) announced that its HYBRIFLEX cabling solution is being tested in the field for the first time in North America by Agri-Valley Broadband in Michigan. HYBRIFLEX combines optical fiber and DC power for remote radio heads in a single corrugated cable. It was unveiled by RFS in April 2010 and has already undergone successful trials in Latin America, Australia and Europe.
