Google Serves Up Mobile Location Data at SXSW

South By Southwest (SXSW) kicked off (March 11-20) and Google's vice president of location and local services, Marissa Mayer, decided to reveal some interesting numbers surrounding Google's Mobile maps in a Day One talk.

Mayer said that 40 percent of all Google Maps usage can be attributed to mobile devices, according to a report of Mayer's talk by Boy Genius Report (BGR). Mayer also said that 150 million mobile users are on Google Maps, with Android users requesting directions at a rate of roughly 12 billion routes per year.

According to the report, Google would also like for its maps, which are the native default on the iPhone, to be even more sophisticated. "We like being the default provider," Mayer said, "but we'd like to get some of these updates out to a broader audience. That's still a debate/question we're considering."

Google yesterday also announced that it would be adding charging station locations to Google Maps for those who need to fuel up their electric cars. Google will update the locations as the U.S. Dept of Energy and National Renewable Energy Labs adds more locations to its database.
