And you thought the Sidekick had gone the way of the dinosaurs. Not so, according to T-Mobile USA. The carrier announced that it has revived the Sidekick in an HSPA+ capable form with a little help from Samsung.
The new Android-powered T-Mobile Sidekick 4G smartphone pays tribute to its predecessor with a 5-row qwerty slider keyboard, "pop-tilt" hinge and the integration of cloud-based services.
The Sidekick 4G comes running Android 2.2 and features a 3.5-inch VGA display, 1 GHz processor, as well as front and rear-facing cameras. The phone also includes Sidekick Group Text and Cloud Text. Cloud Text provides the option to text with friends or groups across devices, from PCs to tablets.
The announcement comes just weeks after T-Mobile announced the impending termination of its cloud-based Danger services. Danger is a subsidiary of Microsoft, which was instrumental in creating the original Sidekick devices, which stored content on the cloud.
According to a statement from T-Mobile, the services will officially be terminated May 31, 2011.
Perhaps the Sidekick 4G was what T-Mobile meant when it said it would provide offers for Sidekick customers before May 31, 2011, to help make an easy transition from their existing Sidekick device to a new device.
