Virgin Mobile Does Away With $40 Unlimited Plan

It looks like the unlimited plan is destined to go the way of the dinosaur. Virgin Mobile will apparently be throttling its data usage based on a 5GB cap, according to a report yesterday from PC Magazine that cites Virgin Mobile spokeswoman Corinne Nosal.

Virgin Mobile will instate the new plans beginning Feb. 15, according to the report. The new strategy follows T-Mobile USA's lead, which recently implemented "throttling" on its unlimited plans.

Throttling allows carriers to reduce the speed of user's data connection once that user has reached a set limit within a 30-day period. In both T-Mobile's and Virgin Mobile's case, that limit is set at 5GB of data per month.

"Customers who use BB2Go for typical email, Internet surfing and reasonable downloading will likely not be impacted/notice any difference," Nosal told PC Magazine.

Virgin Mobile also offers 100 MB of data for $10, which expires after 10 days.
