LG Electronics today staked its claim on the first dual-core smartphone, with the unveiling of the LG Optimus 2X. The Optimus 2X comes packing a Nvidia Tegra 2 processor, which the company says will result in faster Web browsing and applications and lets users multitask with less screen lag.

LG Optimus 2XThe Android-powered phone also comes running Android 2.2 (Froyo) and features a 4-inch WVGA touchscreen, 8GB internal memory (expandable up to 32GB), 8-megapixel rear camera, 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera, 1080p video playback and recording, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

"Dual-core technology is the next leap forward in mobile technology so this is no small achievement to be the first to offer a smartphone utilizing this technology," said Dr. Jong-seok Park, CEO and president of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company, in a statement, adding that the Optimus 2X is proof of the company's commitment to the high-end smartphone market.

LG says the Optimus 2X will be available in Korea next month with countries in Europe and Asia to follow. The Optimus 2X will be upgradeable to Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), with an upgrade schedule to be announced in local markets "in due course."
