Samsung Pulls Plug on Symbian Support

In a post at Samsung's Mobile Innovator Forum for developers today, Samsung announced that over the next three days, it will close all forums, content and labs associated with Nokia's open-source Symbian mobile operating system.

Samsung Mobile has been fickle in recent months regarding its support for Symbian, as the company puts resources into developing its own Bada OS, as well as producing a spate of new Android devices, which include the Galaxy S series of smartphones.

In early September, Yon Hoo Lee, Samsung Mobile's head of marketing, told Reuters that the company was focusing on "Android and Bada for its mobile devices," but failed to directly confirm that it was abandoning Symbian beyond saying that it was "not seeing visible demand for Symbian."

Nokia, meanwhile, appears to have finally got its legs under it where the Symbian operating system is concerned. The Finnish OEM just yesterday started shipping the Nokia N8, which runs the latest iteration of the Symbian OS, Symbian ^3. Nokia has unveiled three additional Symbian ^3 devices expected to launch in the near future.

Samsung was unavailable for comment before press time.
